Henryetta has long been known for its deep connection to rodeo, and that tradition continues through some of the most accomplished cowboys in the sport. Among them is local legend Terry Don West , a world champion bull rider whose remarkable career has earned him a place among the elite names in professional rodeo.
A longtime Henryetta resident, West built an impressive career competing at the highest levels of the sport. His accomplishments include three Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) World Champion Bull Riding titles, two International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) World Champion titles, and a PRCA Reserve World Championship. His success also extended beyond the United States as he represented Team America in both Brazil and Australia.
West is perhaps best known for his ability to conquer some of the toughest bulls in rodeo history. Among his most notable achievements was successfully riding the legendary bull Bodacious twice, a feat few competitors can claim and one that remains a significant part of his rodeo legacy.
His accomplishments brought national recognition not only to himself but also to his hometown. In 2003, West claimed the championship at RODEOHOUSTON's Xtreme Bulls competition after becoming the only rider in the event to complete two successful rides, showcasing the determination and skill that defined his career.
Today, West continues to give back to the sport through his bull riding school, located at his arena in Henryetta. The school offers two-day training sessions where aspiring riders learn directly from a world champion. Participants receive hands-on riding experience, classroom instruction, and video reviews designed to help identify strengths, correct mistakes, and improve overall performance.
The school welcomes riders of all experience levels, from beginners learning the fundamentals of bull riding to seasoned competitors looking to sharpen their skills. Its location in Henryetta also provides visitors and their families an opportunity to experience a community with a rich and celebrated rodeo heritage.
West's connection to Henryetta is part of a much larger story. From the legacy of world champion cowboy Jim Shoulders to the annual Jim Shoulders Living Legends Rodeo and other rodeo traditions that continue throughout the community, Henryetta has earned a reputation for producing and celebrating champions.
For Henryetta, having a world champion such as Terry Don West call the community home is more than a source of pride. His career reflects the determination, perseverance, and western heritage that define the community. Through both his competitive accomplishments and his commitment to teaching the next generation of riders, West continues to strengthen Henryetta's standing as a true rodeo town and a place where champions are made.
